More moving update

Posted on 2009.07.29 at 11:05
Someone wants my old Sofa & Armchair. Yay. So hopefully that means that the Sofa, Armchair, Bed and my print are all spoken for. Which is a great help (thank you to people here looking at those things).

I researched yesterday a few paperwork details, but I still need to setup PG&E and Internet Services.

I did set aside another full bag of books to sell off/get rid of, though I didn't manage to do the Clothing. Tonight!

Bank of America
Various Credit Cards
Work HR
Old Work for 401k stuff (really should deal with 401k stuff from old work)
Post Office (forwarding)
Family & Friends
KQED (I'm a contributing member)
Amazon (wishlist/billing/etc.)
Insurance (Auto, Rental)
Social Security
Dentist, Eye Doctor
Used this as a guide

I miss anything?

Moving is such a PITA.

I do have to say I've never informed Social Security about a new address... they seem to find me for those semi-random updates they send about how much money I've paid in that I won't ever be getting.

I'd add to your list any hardcopy subscriptions you might get - magazines or whatever.

Moving is a PITA, srsly.

I don't have any hardcopy subs, really. I got cook's illustrated through KQED and I'll check it but I think it was like a 3 mo. sub, rather than a full year.

I recommend Sonic for an ISP. On that side of the bay you should have no problem getting DSL through them. Their service and their customer service is excellent.

She should be able to get DSL from them where she is right now - I've got them further south.

But yeah - Sonic.net is the awesome.

You can't get Sonic up here, only Verizon. Novato is a comp'ny town.

No comcast either? o.O
rbus at 2009-07-31 00:42 (UTC) (Link)
i've verizon dsl.
in a different location, of course.
after some confusion on the initial setup,
have found their service to be reliable.

and pc-gamer-boy says the speed is "not bad" which is about as high a praise as a teenage boy can muster.

You really do not want Comcast up here for your DSL.
zhaneel69 at 2009-08-01 16:45 (UTC) (Link)
Oooookay. Um, I already have an appointment setup but I can work to change that. I hate them as a company, but often found their cable better than DSL.

Let me expand: at some point we tried to switch from Verizon to Comcast. The local installers made a mess, got Samwise to sign a piece of paper they claimed "just shows we were here and installed it" (it wasn't - had a whole bunch of disclaimers on it), and then it didn't work properly. We also found out that they do not guarantee a connection will work if you have more than one computer, that is, if (like many people) you have a router allowing multiple computers to run off your connection. That, we were told, required a special and extra-cost Comcast Networking.
zhaneel69 at 2009-08-04 02:16 (UTC) (Link)
Ah. Standard Comcast bullshit.

We know they don't gaurantee the connection (but ours has worked fine because chesh can setup and maintain the router/etc.) for more than one comp. The installers are royal pain and I did just deal with one who setup my connection (after the outer line broke), locked me out of my account (Grr) and in spite of promising no charge, I got charged later that month. So I bitched at customer service on the service (they got me back into my account) and bitched when I got my bill and they reversed the charges.

So, while that completely means I shouldn't give them my business, my experiences with Verizon as a cell company aren't hugely better and in general we prefer cable to DSL (though chesh would love some fiber *sigh*). I thought you perhaps meant that the service was slow/intermittent compared to DSL.

Since you're spending too much time at the office anyway, ask your HR person how to get your old company's 401(k) rolled into your current one. Then the old company can find out where you are through the forwarding order.
zhaneel69 at 2009-07-29 22:09 (UTC) (Link)
I've considered this in the past. However, I am not overly fond of my company's 401k plan (fee schedule is harsh) and so I keep meaning to roll the old into a new private one, but you are probably correct that work would be easier (and thereby, more likely to get done)

If you bother with such things don't forget to update your Voter Registration information...
